Did you know you can do spin art from home? This DIY spin art with just canvas and acrylic paint is a totally fun teenage (and kid) friendly art activity that you can do right in your back yard. Aside from getting creative, spin art is SUPER fun. Parents and children will both want to be involved!
Spin Art Supplies
- Canvas of any size, black or white
- Fluid Acrylic Paints
About Purchasing Canvas: There are a lot of canvas sizes but if you try Hobby Lobby or Michaels, they typically have black canvas which is fun to use. We usually purchase a variety of sizes for our spaces, which also makes the art look so unique. Also check to see if the canvas has a bar on the back, which helps you spin it if you choose to spin over throw.
About Purchasing Acrylic Paints: Before you as, you can use regular acrylics, but fluid acrylic paints “Ready To Pour” work best. They really flow when you throw them and give results the first time. Plus, fluid acrylics dry really quickly and really well. If you choose to use regular acrylic paint, you may want to water down the paint so it runs easier.

Spin Art Tutorial
When I was a kid we had these spin art craft sets that you could purchase, pour in paint, and then spin. It was pretty fun. Then on TikTok we saw people doing spin art with a drill. Simply cconnecting a drill to the back of a canvas and spinning off the paint – super fun idea. For us, while fun, seems like an unnecessary step. You can simply throw the canvas by the edge OR use the bar on the back of most large canvas’ to spin it.
To get started, add your paint in patterns around your canvas. You can do this in a variety of ways – try putting colors in lines, in a pattern, certain colors around the edge. This is your chance to get super creative and have some fun. Just be careful – ready to pour paints come out fast!
Once you are pleased with your designs, go out to a clear area, you need to spin your art! Psst, this is the FUN part!
How to Spin the Paint on the Canvas
- Square Canvas – Simply take canvas by the very edge in one hand and spin it out into the yard, keeping it face up.
- Rectangle Canvas – Most longer rectangle canvas have a bar on the back so you can spin in a circle. Face the top OUT and spin. Keep in mind paint will go flying everywhere, so have paint friendly clothing and not near other people or places you don’t want to have paint (grass works best!)
With Fluid paints, just lay flat and let dry before hanging.

All you need to do is put the paint on a canvas and throw it spinning into a safe area, like a yard . The Paint will spin out on its own. Throw it again (spinning) if you want it more swirly. We usually throw ours 2-3 times. There is a video if you watch it. 🙂
